You shouldn't write a letter to a judge about any case you have an interest in, or that your family members have an interest in. The only reason to write a letter to a judge is because he is your friend and you are wishing him well AND you do not have a case pending in front of him. Judges are not supposed to read ex parte correspondence or have ex parte communications with one of the parties outside of court. Reading letters from one party, or a member of a party's family makes them seem partial, rather than impartial. It violates the Judicial Canon, and can get the judge in trouble. I know one judge in San Diego who simply returns the letters to the parties, unopened, politely. A lot of pro pers feel like writing to the judge that decides their case, and I can tell you that it sends the case downhill, in a spiral, from there.
