In a gneeral sense, the difference between divorce and legal separation is termination of marital status. In other words, when you are divorced, you are legally restored to the status of a single person, and when you are legally separated, you are not legally restored to the status of a single person - you remain husband and wife.

For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
