Legal Question in Family Law in California

I am getting married and my soon to be has arrears as well as payingn current support for the next 7 years. Can the State of CA and his ex hold me legally responsible for his debt once we are married?

Your fianc�e will not be responsible for support once you are married. However, if you hold bank accounts or other assets jointly, those resources could be subject to a lien for past due support.

I think Ms. Kock misunderstood your question as her answers are normally dead on. Not so this time.

You are not liable for your ex's arrears nor are you liable for his current support order.

On the other hand, if you hold joint accounts or file jointly for taxes, any monies held or owed to your two jointly, may be garnished and/or held by the state to pay his back support order.
