Legal Question in Family Law in California

Am I really married if he is not a citizen of the u.s.

I got married in vegas 6 years ago to a man i did not know. It turned out that he was not a us citizen and only married me to stay here. I refused to file any paperwork to make him legal and I haven't seen or heard from him since.Am I considered married to him and require a divorce or in the marriaige invalid?

if you went thru a valid marriage ceremony, you will be deemed married and would either have to formally file for divorce or an annulment if the marriage was premised on fraud or other such circumstances. feel free to email me directly with your contact info for a free case evaluation/consultation.

YES your are married to him, assuming that the person in Nevada performing the ceremony complied with Nevada Law. To my knowledge all states require that marriages be performed by individuals licensed or recognized by the state, and all ceremonies be properly recorded. Check marriage records in Nevada, if you want to be certain.

You would probably be able to have the marriage annulled, on the ground of fraud. That is he married you only to remain in the U.S.
