Legal Question in Family Law in California
I have been married to my husband for almost 2 years but unfortunately it's just not working out. I want a divorce.
I am English and have my own apartment in Surrey which I solely own. I acquired this before we were married and he has not contributed to it. My husband rents his house and I have not contributed to it.. except for around $12,000 in cash for this and that with no paper trail I'm afraid. We were married and live in California. I have never been married/divorced before.. If he can be greedy and make it hard for me he will. What should I look out for? What is he entitled to?

Your home in Surrey will remain your separate property unless during the marriage you earned income and made payments on it. Your labor is community property and he would be entitled to a portion that the payments made toward the principal reduced the principal, in relation to the increase in the amount of equity. There is actually a calculation for this. You do not owe him any money for the rent he paid.
