Legal Question in Family Law in California
Married or Not
A few years ago (1988) I married a woman who told me she was divorced. I found out several months later that her divorce was not final. At that time, I spoke with an attorney who told me that the marriage was invalid and that I was not married. I haven't seen this woman in over 10 years. Now I am considering marrying someone else. Do I have to get an annulment or divorce, or am I indeed single?

In a general sense, and based solely upon the information you have provided, you have to obtain a divorce or anullment before you are legally eligible to remarry.
For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!

Re: Married or Not
You need to get a judicial determination that you are not married. You can this achieve this by way of divorce or nullity. In any event, it may be very unwise to get married before you resolve the situation.
