Legal Question in Family Law in California

I'm in the middle of a divorce. I have a family law attorney and my soon to be ex husband does not. Prior to our mandatory settlement conference today, my attorney informed me that my husband's mother called to discuss my husband being able to speak with our son via telephone. First off I have been very clear that I'm uncomfortable with his mother, and second of all I never gave permission for my attorney to speak with his mother. Is it legal for my attorney to have this discussion or any discussion for that matter with my mother in law?

Of course it is legal, unless you are claiming your attorney breached some attorney client privilege or something. If you don't want your attorney talking to your husband's mother, that is a case management/client relationship issue for you to work out with your attorney. The law does not micro-manage attorneys and clients like that.
