Legal Question in Family Law in California

Minor's name change without formal adoption

I have a six year old son who is from a previous relationship. I have recently gotten remarried and my child has expressed an interest in sharing my last name, however he does not want to give up his father's name. I explained what hyphenation meant and he thought that would be a good idea. How can I go about doing this? What are the special laws regarding this procedure?

Thank you!

Christine
