If my mother has custody of my son, can I obtain a copy of my sons school records, progress reports, report cards?

Most likely, the answer is no. If the courts gave custody to your mother, it would most likely have been in a guardianship, a juvenile case, or, as part of a family law matter where they took custody away from the parents. In each of these 3 scenarios it is extremely probable that the courts gave to your mother the sole legal custody of your child. Without you having any legal custody, then no, you do not have a right to obtain any of your son's records, either school or medical.

You are the biological parent. The court in standard parenting arrangements between a biological mother and father support joint legal custody where the parents together make decisions for the health, education and welfare of the child. If the grandmother has custody, there is a background in your case that must be assessed by a skilled family law attorney in order to properly ascertain your legal rights.
