Legal Question in Family Law in California

The mother of my daughter is telling me that she is not going to let my daughter come see me in California this summer. They live in Chicago. She moved my daughter out there about 8 years ago, against my will. She and I were never married and have not been together since the pregnancy. We have never been to court for custody or visitation. I have always had to play by her rules. It was her way, or the highway. I have always done what she asked of me in fear of losing my daughter completely. I am not a drug addict, nor have I ever been in trouble with the law. I have never given her any reason to keep me from seeing my daughter. I work two jobs and go to college. I am an honest, hard-working man that just wants to see his daughter. I missed out on her childhood. I have only had my daughter for one Christmas and one birthday out of eleven. I've missed things that I will never get back. I cannot afford to miss any more time with my daughter. What legal ground do I have to stand on? Because this has never been to court, is there anything I can do? Anytime I've threatened her with taking her to court and fighting for my rights, she tells me I will never see my daughter. I have always done what she asked of me in fear of losing my daughter completely. Please, help me. Thank you.

I am not clear from your question if you are married to the biological mother. It seems since the child has been in Illinois for 8 years, you would need to consult a Chicago attorney to explore your legal options.
