Legal Question in Family Law in California

MSA and life insurance beneficiary

We are doing an amicable non-contested divorce. One child age 7.

Question regarding life insurance beneficiary:

a)

My wife asked that **she** be the life insuarance beneficiary. Is that the norm? Or is it usually in the child's name?

b)

My wife asked for a $300k term life ins policy. Is that an extremely high amount, or is that the norm?

(I read some FAQs where people are talking about $100k life ins policies, so that makes me think that $300k is higher than the norm)

Thank you!

Re: MSA and life insurance beneficiary

There is no "norm". Such an order is not unusual, but she would not be the beneficiary other than as trustee to the son. If there is insurance in place, she could be awarded the policy and be named as the beneficiary and she would pay the premiums. Does she have a right to require you to maintain a policy, probably not, but every case is decided on its own facts. If she is concerned she should obtain and pay the premiums on a policy of her own.
