Obtaining Guardianship/Temporary Custody of Grandchild

How does one go about obtain either temporary guardianship/legal custody of a grandchild? What is the process? Can this be done without attorney fees?

It is possible to file a petition for the grandparents to be appointed as the guardian. A filing fee must be paid to the court. Although it is possible to do this without an attorney it is not a simple procedure. In addition to the probate code you must comply with the local rules regarding the procedure for notice to the court investigator. At the hearing you must show that returning the child to the parent or parents would be detrimental to the child.
