Legal Question in Family Law in California
I owe over 25000 in back child support. Some of it is over 18 years old. I have been in and out of prison most of my adult life. I am currently unemployee and my wife is paying what she can so that I may keep my license. I tried to reach an agreement with the child support department and was denied. None of the support is owed to the other parent. All is owed to the state. How can I get my back child support reduced and do I need a lawyer

If child support is being enforced by a local child support agency, there is legal authority that allows the agency to compromise arrears with the obligor parent. Off of the top of my head, I believe there is a limit to how much can be reduced and compromised.
