Do papers have to be served

my wife and i seperated dec 31st 2001.She has only seen our son 3 times since then.She moved to maryland and i live in CA.I filed for legal seperation andto get custody of our son.I am supposed to go to cort in june.I have no adress to serve thepapers.Does she have to recieve the papers in order for us to get a legal seperation and for me to get custody.ivetied everthing i can to locate her.

The petition for a legal separation must be served on the respondent. Normally this is done by personal service. However, if the party has disappeared you can obtain a court order for the petition can be served by publication.
