Legal Question in Family Law in California

Parent Rights?

This is regarding my 18 year old daughter. Unfornately, I have been experiencing a lot of problems with her recently. She does not want to comply with any of my ''house rules'' ie., coming in before 5:00 am. She believes that because she is 18, she can come and go as she pleases, does not have to pay rent and, basically, absolutely no accountability. I have asked her to move out on many different occasions. She told me that she contacted someone (she would not tell me whom), who told her that she did not have to pay rent and that she could not be ''kicked'' out of her house. Is this true? I've got a monster on my hands and I need to put her back in her place, but how? She truly comes and goes as she pleases and she is getting impossible to live with. Can you help me?

Sincerely,

Brenda

Re: Parent Rights?

Give her notice and then change the locks on the doors and do not give her a key. Whether or not you let her back into the house is up to you. However, before allowing her to return you should insist that she agree to follow the house rules and pay rent. Making her pay rent could convert her into a tenant and give her certain rights as a tenant
