Legal Question in Family Law in California
Parental Responsibility for College Tuition for a child over 18
Divorced in 1990.Initially shared custody 50/50, full custody of my daughterto me 3 years ago, 100% custody of both children since July 1998.Daughter now 18. Were told college educations would be taken care of by dad's parents, so no college funds My daughter starts college this mont, at this point will be funded by loans and grants.Ex has indicated has money for my daughter, but won't disclose how much to me, and expects my daughter to call him to ask for the money. Her feeling is that her Dad abandoned her and does not want to be bribed for money. I have writted him a letter asking him to write to her, that's as much as I can do at this point.
The question is, is there any legal requirement for her father to give her money that was supposedly set aside for her education, or can he withhold the money legally until she bites the bulllet and contacts him? I don't want to force her to contact her dad in the manner he wants, and unfortunately if we have to pay for college with loans, credit cards etc. we will. We are talking about a cost or $12000 per year for a state university. Would appreciate any direction you can give us in this matter. Thank you

Re: Parental Responsibility for College
there is no legal obligation to pay anything. the girl is an adult.
