Legal Question in Family Law in California

Parents taking money.

My 21 year old girlfriend is currently

living with her father and her step-

mother. She recently got into a car

accident in which it was the car's

fault. Part of the steering

mechanism broke while she was

driving on the freeway and caused

her to spin out of control. If she

ended up filing a law-suit against her

car company/dealership and won,

how does the money become split up

if she is paying for everything on the

car except insurance, and she is a co-

signer with her step-mother, and she

is on their insurance? Her father has

a history of taking money from her

(Recent money insurance is giving

her, and doing unethical things with

taxes so that him and his wife

save/get money because of taxes but

making so she doesn't get federal

money for school), and we suspect

he would try to take most of, or all of

any money that she hypothetically

could get from a law-suit. We are

trying to figure out how to avoid the

situation.
