do i have to let the other party know i have a lawyer?

You need to tell us more about what the legal situation is. In general, no, you do not have to reveal you have an attorney. But once you do something the other side feels is beyond your ability, they will likely assume you do have a lawyer. Also, the other side is not supposed to communicate with you if you have a lawyer, although their attorney would not get in trouble for doing so since the atorney is unaware of your being represented.
