Legal Question in Family Law in California

Can I get past child support or alimoney after 18 years being divorced?

I came to the US in 1984 to visit a member of my family with my only son, he was 5 yeas old. My husband lived in Germany at the time, when my visit was over wanted to go back, he refused to support us in that country. I coulden't get visa to go back, so I had to stay in the US. I filed for divorce so I can get on with my life. Because he was a traveling salesman, we had to notify him 3 times through advertisemtent. no answer from him. I got custody, but not a dime after 12 years of marriage. He moved to the us with his new family last year, financially he is doing very well. Can I take him to court now that he is here phisically, because I feel I made who he is today with my hard work the first 12 years of our marriage. I'm not married at the time. Thank you for your advise.

The information you provided indicates that your son is presently over 21. Therefore unless there was a court order for child support you cannot collect support after the fact. In California the court cannot make a order for child support for any time prior to the filing of the paper work requesting child support.
