Legal Question in Family Law in California
what is the penalty if someone lies on paperwork regarding child custody

Sadly, not as hard as it should be. The penalty lies in the judge not viewing you in a good light. Not what you want when someone is making serious decisions about your life. If you need further assistance, check out http://www.ellifritzlaw.com
It varies. There are times when you can do something about it, however there are times when very little occurs. It really depends on the issue and the Judge.

Good luck
If the statement was made under penalty of perjury it is a felony. The problem you will have is that it will have to be very clear and provable that the party lied. You will have to convince the police and the district attorney to press charges.
