Legal Question in Family Law in California

Petitioner wants legal separation, respondent wants divorce

I was served a petition for legal separation in January of 1999. I responded with a request for dissolution and now the petitioner won't follow through. What is my recourse? I will not hire a lawyer so don't bother to tell me to do that. Can I, as the respondent, finish the process or do I need to start over? If I start over, what happens to the case on file?
