Legal Question in Family Law in California
I am pregnant and unmarried in California. I plan to move to Ohio soon and I would like to have complete custody of the child. I am worried that the father might follow me there and/or file for custody. What are the father's rights in regard to visitation and custody? Does the fact that we were never married make any difference?

There are some real problems that you can incur. If the child is born in California, this state will have custody jurisdiction. If it is born in Ohio, Ohio will have custody jurisdiction and California will have child support jurisdiction. If you plan to live in Ohio there are real advantages to you having custody jurisdiction in that state. There may be some factors that would change those outcomes. I would strongly suggest that you consult with an attorney very soon so that you can make the decision that would give you the most control. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
