Legal Question in Family Law in California

Procedure for Name Change for a Minor

Read your past Q & A's. How do I contact the court clerk (Alameda County) to obtain forms to legally change name for my minor child (age 14). Do I physically go to Superior or Muni court building, go through attorney? What's the best way? Does it have to be published in newspaper? How long does the process usually take?

Thank you!

Re: Procedure for Name Change for a Minor

How you approach this situation would depend on whether both parents consent to the name change. Forms are available from the clerk. publication in a newspaper is required. You could probably to it yourself, but it would be better to use an attorney if you can afford it.
