Legal Question in Family Law in California
What are the processes of getting an emancipation?
What are the processes of getting an emacpiation? How long does it take, and what are the financial costs? Would I need to hire a lawyer? By the way I'm 17, so while I CAN support myself I want to save as much money as I possibly can since I'm in college, and someone told me it could cost up to $500, which would mean it might be a while til I can do that.

Dear Inquirer:
Nothing herein shall create an attorney-client relationship, unless a written retainer agreement is executed by the attorney and client. This communication contains general information only. Nothing herein shall constitute an attorney-client communication nor legal advice. There likely are deadlines and time-limits associated with your case; you should contact an attorney of your choice for legal advice specific to your personal situation, at once.

For an emancipation, I would say that most lawyers require a retainer of $500 to $1000 dollars (more or less, some of which may be refundable).
You might be able to do it yourself, however. Take a look at:

Thanks for sharing your interesting inquiry, and good luck with your case.

You could wait until you are 18 and there would be no cost. The forms for emancipation are designed to be simple to prepare. The legislative order was that the forms should be designed to allow an individual in your position to fill them out unassisted. your only out of pocket costs would be the cost of the forms, which you can get for free at accesslaw.com and the court filing fee.
