Legal Question in Family Law in California
protection of my assets
I married late in life about 10 years ago. Up until then I had over $400,000 in bank cds from money that I earned from working and saving. As the cds matured I moved the money to different banks during the 80's and then during the 90's I continued to do the same. I got married in 1992. I have the money now scattered in 4 cds in 4 different banks. How can I prove that these cd's come from my money before I got married. The originl banks are no longer in existance -- they have been bought out by larger institutions and their records don't go back more than 6 years. And the original cd documents I disposed of when the cds matured. So I have no record of any cds purchased in the 80s before I got married. The original $400,000 are now in cds that I have acquired in the last few years during marriage. So I've rolled $400,000 of my hard earned money in cds for over the last 20 years living off the interest. But how do I prove it's my money prior to marriage?

Re: protection of my assets
You will have to be able to trace the existing assets back to their source. The procedure for tracing will depend upon the facts in your case.
You should immediately retain the services of an attorney with family law experience to represent you in this matter. The attorney can discuss the facts of your case with you and then determine the best course of action to take.
