A trial setting conference is where the parties appear before the judge, who asks what would be a good trial date, and are the parties ready for trial. Usually enough time has elapsed so that the parties should be ready (having done discovery, etc.) and anyone who says they are not ready for trial had better have a good reason ("I am a pro per and I don't know what I'm doing" isn't a "good reason.") Often local court rules provide that each party, or both parties jointly, must prepare a Trial Setting Conference Statement that has information such as how much court time should be allocated for the trial. Sometimes this document has to be served/filed a specified number of court days (such as 5 court days = one calendar week) prior to the conference. The notice of trial setting conference you received should have this information on it, or you can refer to the local rules. Normally there is no reason to have a continuance of the Trial Setting Conference.
