What is a qdro?

if someone is awarded rights to collect part of a

spouses retirement in the future as part of a divorce

settlement, why do they then have to file a qdro and

why does it cost so much since it is already a part of

a court order? Can it be filed by the individ

Federal law requires a qrdo (qualifired domestic relations order). That order is required to insure the distribution of the retirement plan without adverse tax consequences.
