Legal Question in Family Law in California
I have a question on when child support ceases per California law. My child has graduated high school and is attending college (lives at the college) but has not yet turned 18. At what point does child support end per Civil Code 196.5?
"Pursuant to Civil Code Section 196.5,child support shall continue as set forth above and extend as to any unmarried child who has attained the age of 18, is a full time highschool student, and resides with a parent, until such time as he or she completes the 12th grade or attains the age of 19, whichever first occurs."

Your quote answers your question. It only applies "to any unmarried child who has attained the age of 18." Until the child turns 18, section 196.5 doesn't come into play. Support continues no matter what. Once the child does turn 18, it does not apply because the child is not "a full time highschool student, and resides with a parent, . . ." Absent a court order on other grounds, support ends.
