Legal Question in Family Law in California

Question on 1993 Divorce in California

I was divorced in 1993 in California. (married 1977 in Illinois). I was taken advantage of by a nasty, cutthroat husband, to put it extremely mildly. I was promised I could stay in the home in lieu of getting no alimony support, but ended up having to sell the home, assume many joint bills. I've been living with my parents, living paycheck to paycheck. I just looked up my ex, to find he is a high ranking officer in a telecom company, and owns many properties. is there any way to go back to court on this? We were married almost 16 years. California's no fault laws robbed me. I am still repairing my credit, and living paycheck to paycheck. I have never been able to buy property, now 10 years later, and this man is a major property owner and executive. Is there anything I can do to get some kind of payment from him? Can you also tell me the process of social security when I reach retirement, and whether I am entitled to the same amount he would receive? I don't know how many ex-wives he has at this point. Please, please help me on this one. This is one more case where the guy was an abuser and an adulterer, and has come out as usual, smelling like a rose.

Dear Inquirer:

Nothing herein shall create an attorney-client relationship, unless a written retainer agreement is executed by the attorney and client. This communication contains general information only. Nothing herein shall constitute an attorney-client communication nor legal advice. There likely are deadlines and time-limits associated with your case; you should contact an attorney of your choice for legal advice specific to your personal situation, at once.

If you haven't already done so, please visit my

The site contains quite a bit of general information about California Family Law, Tenants' Rights, and Juvenile Dependencies, as well as information about me (education, experience, et cetera) and my office (location, hours, fees, policies).

NOW, IN RESPONSE TO YOUR INQUIRY --

Obviously my first question is "where was your lawyer during all of this." It is extremely difficult to set aside or modify the property aspects (including division of debts) this long after the judgment. It may still be possible, however, to get spousal support -- depending upon whether or not the court reserved jurisdiction. Contact an experienced Family Law attorney in the county where you were divorced for specific advice and possible representation on your behalf.

Thanks for sharing your interesting inquiry with us on LawGuru, and good luck with your case.
