Legal Question in Family Law in California

Raising Grandchild why parent are deployed or working

Grandchild's mom would like for us to provide and care for our grandson for 3 months. She has re-inlisted in the Army. Our son is in Iraq should return in June. Trying to determine what we need to do legally while he is in our care. Should we get temporary custody, power of attorney?
