I recieved authorization from the judge (California) to make a public notice through a newspaper. Where can I find out what format it needs to be in? I have the family law summary but it is 2 pages.

Any newspaper qualifed for publication of legal notices will be able to help you with that.

What Mr. McCormick refers to is what is commonly referred to as the "legal publications department." You need to contact the newspaper of general circulation in your area, and ask them to direct you to the person that handles that responsibility for the paper. They will tell you what you need. Usually they require a copy of the summons, if you are serving a summons by publication. If you are doing something else, like a name change, then they will need those documents.
