Legal Question in Family Law in California

Reimbursement for Reasonable Expenses of Pregnancy & Birth

If an unwed mother obtains prenatal and birth services via MediCal, will the legal father of the child be required to reimburse the state of California for these services? Will the father be required to pay all "reasonable expenses" or just a portion? What counts as "reasonable expenses" in such a case?

Yes you can request that the father pay for the reasonable expenses of the pregnancy. Since you were on medical, it would be up to DCSS to seek reimbursement for the services that you cost the state and county. It would be their job to seek reimbursement. If you have expenses outside of medi-cal then you could ask that the father help pay for half of those costs.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
