Legal Question in Family Law in California

Requirements for divorce

Can I get a divorce without having an attorney? What are the steps, where do I get started? I have 2 children, and cannot afford an attorney, but make over the income limit for legal aide, what are my options. My husband has all but 1 credit card in HIS name, will I be responsible to help pay those off?

Re: Requirements for divorce

first meet with an attorney to discuss the options that may be available to you. You should be able to find an attorney who will give you a free consultation. If you decide that you must proceed without an attorney find a book that will guide you through the process. Check Nolo Press for a book on how to get a divorce. Also check with the local family court about a law clinic to provide further assistance. There are to many variables and forms to fill out to give you an answer over the internet. In regard to the credit cards if your name is on any of these accounts then ou should contact the credit card company and cancel the credit cards. First by telephone and then a followup letter confirming that you talked to "name of the person" on "date" and canceled this credit card, giving credit card number.
