Residency/Custody Question

I am an Irish citizen with legal residence in the US dependent upon my staying married to my husband - also an Irish citizen. How would a divorce affect the custody allocation of our son - a US citizen ?

The allocation of custodial time would depend upon where each parent lives, the age of the child, and financial abilities of the parents. The parent providing the primary care for the child from birth to the date of the separation.
