what does retaining jurisdiction for modification of support mean and if they didnt retain it couldnt you still go back to the same court anyway?

The court always retains jurisdiction over child custody and support. The court is required to retain jurisdiction over spousal support in certian circumstances, and may or may not retain jurisdiction of not required to. If the court did not retain jurisdiction, it would be nearly impossible for either party to seek a modification of spousal support.

Retain jurisdiction can also include the the judges continued proper management and division of property such as a house, debt, division of retirement as examples.
