The court always retains jurisdiction over child custody and support. The court is required to retain jurisdiction over spousal support in certian circumstances, and may or may not retain jurisdiction of not required to. If the court did not retain jurisdiction, it would be nearly impossible for either party to seek a modification of spousal support.
Are you talking about child support or spousal support? Was this a long term marriage (10+ years) . What does the judgment or order actually say about support. You will need to provide this info in order for someone to give you a useful answer
Retain jurisdiction can also include the the judges continued proper management and division of property such as a house, debt, division of retirement as examples.
