Legal Question in Family Law in California

retrieval of personal property

I have currently left a very unsafe living situation with an ex-boyfriend whom I was living with for four years. As of April this year, I was laid off from my job and have not been able to find work until just recently. This person and I shared a storage unit in Fairfield, CA and have been residing in Contra Costa County for the last four years. The storage place only let us put one person's name on the account and he is the one listed. Now that I have left out of fear for my life and safety, he has put a double lock on the storage unit and is refusing me access. How do I gain access to my stuff legally? Since April, he has been paying for the storage unit and I am prepared to pay him back, but I want him ordered to return my stuff immediately! I also have a restraining order against him and my court date is fast approaching. No one seems to be able to answer my question. I am sure I am not the only one who has been in this predicament! Please Help!!

Re: retrieval of personal property

If the issue of the return of your property has been raised in your request for the up coming hearing, you can request the court to order him to allow you access to the storage locker. Assuming that you get such an order, have a police officer present, on civil standby. The process is slow but the officer will not allow any violent conduct by the ex boyfriend.

Representation by an attorney in these circumstances would be a great help to you.
