Re: do i have any rights in california
You may. There are residency requirements for filing in California. Does the person who filed the divorce satisfy those residency requirements? Even if the person does satisfy the residency requirements, you can still either represent yourself (but you'll have to come to CA to do that in person) or hire an attorney to represent you if you can't come in person. Many people work out their divorce in advance and submit their agreement to court in writing instead of appearing in court. Perhaps this is an option for you. If you're interested in trying to work out the details of the divorce, you may wish to contact a mediator who can do mediations over the telephone (try mostenmediation.com) or on the internet.
If you just don't want a divorce at all, unfortunately, California is a "no fault" state, and so there's no grounds to contest whether or not your spouse will be able to get a divorce (assuming they've followed the proper procedure). Good luck!
