Rights after child abandonment

After divorce some years ago, ex convinced me to file abandonment papers relinquishing his rights and responsbilities so he wouldn't have to pay support. I was afraid of him as he threatened to take our child if I didn't. He has never paid support or seen child for years. We have suffered financially. Child wants to go to college; can't afford it. What recourse do child and I have, if any? Can child ever get support? Does not want to see/talk to dad; doesn't even remember him. What if dad dies? Will child have claims to any part of estate? Dad has excellent career and retirement, social security, etc. Thanks

You should contact the local child support office and discuss the facts of your case with them. If you child is 18 or older then you will not be able to collect child support, unless there is a child support order.
