Legal Question in Family Law in California
I am in Riverside County California. My wife of 7 years filed for divorce on 2/17/22. I went on the county website today and found out about that. She did not tell me. The county website said her lawyer served me on 3/7/22. I never received any service. I do not want to go into default (they give us 30 days to respond). How do get an extension so I can have time to find a lawyer and prepare? Can I contact the court and file a document with them requesting an extension? Since I was never served, even though they say I was, How do I get them to serve me properly so I can see the documents that state what she wants in settlement?

The best thing to do is just call her lawyer and ask for 30 days from the conversation to respond. Explain you were not served properly and are getting a lawyer. If he or she refuses and takes your default, any lawyer you hire would be able to get the default set aside and get her lawyer in trouble with the court for bad faith conduct. Family law judges have little patience with people who play hardball for no reason.
