Legal Question in Family Law in California
Separating, after 20 years...not married
I have lived with my boyfriend for about 20 years. Several times we were to get married. I had even changed my last name to his many years ago. I have numerous cards and letters with him calling me his wife. After all of this time, we have called it quits. During our years together I had been an equal contributor to our housing, food etc. For many years he hardly had any contribution. A few years ago he bought a house in his name. He just sold it and told me that he knows some of the profit is mine. Do I have any legal recourse to get this money?

In a general sense, if you were never married, you have no community property rights. You might have rights if there was an agreement - commonly referred to as a palimony lawsuit.
For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
