what are my right if i got separated

It's not that you have any rights, really. Filing for separation lets the world know you are getting a divorce. But you will not be able to file a joint tax return for next year if you are legally separated.

If you are going to get a divorce, it is my personal opinion that you might as well file for dissolution instead of separation.

You have no additional rights and in most cases it is advisable to file for divorce as opposed to separation. Separation, legal or otherwise, just confirms that you are still legally married but are separated and presumably, unless reconciliation will eventually divorce. Sometimes, separation can cause one to lose medical benefits so you need to check with the covered spouses employer.
