Legal Question in Family Law in California

How to serve papers to a spouse residing outside the US?

I wish to divorce my husband of 5 years. We got married in Nevada, but he was never a legal resident of the US, and after the marriage returned to Hong Kong. He will probably not agree to a divorce though to my understanding his acceptance is not needed. How do I then serve divorce papers to someone outside of the US? Do I need to mail my documents to a legal office in Hong Kong and have them serve the papers? Otherwise, is divorcing a spouse in another country the same as if they lived in the US?

Thanks.
