Legal Question in Family Law in California

Settlement of child support

I have a son who will turn 18 in 2 years and 7 months. We have never had a relationship and the mother would like to settle the balance of child support for $8,500.00 instead of me making monthly payments for the next 2 years and 7 months. Can we do this and is there some form or letter for release that we can use?

Reply: Settlement of child support

In a general sense, the risk you run by pre-paying it is that the other parent ends up comming back for more later on. There is no way to waive it or pre-pay it. You may wish to consider putting the money in a savings account and withdraw from it monthly to pay your child support obligation, keeping the interest for yourself.

For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
