New single father- wasn't married to mother

I'm inquiring about a guy who is the father of a 2 month old baby. Him and the baby's mother were never married and they have not gone to court over anything. He pays her an agreed amount of support and she lets him visit the baby. Although, she tries to tell him who he can take the baby around and what him and the baby can do while they're together and they end up fighting. I advised that he go to the court. What steps should he take to get joint custody? He's very low on $, but wants some kind of control over his baby. Also, what kinds of situations call for 'supervised visits'? Thanks!

He should file a petition to establish paternity. Then serve her with a summons and a copy of the filed petition for paternity. He can also file a motion to set custody and visitation. Many courts have a family law clinic that will provide him with more detailed direction in this matter.
