Usually venue is proper where the child is currently residing. The court doesn't care much if you have to travel to another county, but they are interested in what is the best interests of the child. You can file a motion to change venue, but it may not be successful if the child is residing in the county where the court hearings are taking place.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
