Legal Question in Family Law in California
Hi there. My son has been emancipated he is 27 years old. My ex-wife filed a child support claim against me 2 years ago for $27,000. All along I paid her but I cannot document because I gave her cash. The county of San Bernardino is very unhelpful and has now suspended my drivers license making it difficult for me to work. I have called them to see if they will work with me but they say pay 2/3 of the balance and we will release your drivers license. I am now told that I have to sue the San Bernardino Child Support services in or der to get anywhere with this. Is there no possible way to have this debt modified down like a a collection would normally do due to my low income and inability to pay the entire amount? I sure wish I could get some help. Of course my ex-wife will not budge even though she has remarried a successful man, has a new family and lives in an expensive home. Life is grand for her but I can't even et employment because of this. Please help....

You need to talk to a competent family law attorney. Your post raises a number of issues that do not make much sense in the manner you have presented them.
For example, emancipation for children occurs when they are minors. A minor is someone who is under the age of 18. Emancipation can occur through various methods. Emancipation terminates the obligation to pay child support. Someone who is over the age of 18 is not emancipated, because they are no longer a minor.
I agree with Mr. Roach.
