Legal Question in Family Law in California

My son just received divorce papers. His wife had filed them 5 years ago but never did anything with them and just sent them to him last week. There isn't anything in the papers that are correct now or current. He is in prison due to a very bad and complicated car accident. He lost his house he purchased before they were married and also his business. They have 2 small children that are with his wife. Should he respond to this or can she legally use 5 year old papers?

I suggest having an attorney find out if the divorce is still filed with the court. Some courts will dismiss a case that is over 5 years old without any service.
