Legal Question in Family Law in California

My son turned 18 in January, his mother has had full custody since he was 5, I have not seen him since. Thorough out the years family members as well as friends that have to tried to contact him in any way have met with resistance from mothers atty. I am trying to determine which is the best way to see him as we live in very close proximity & his school is even closer. I would like to avoid his home all together and am considering approaching the school principal to help me if possible.

If there is no court order prohibiting you from contacting your son, you should be able to freely see your child. You should inform any authorities that you are the legal parent of this child and you wish to see your child. If your child is that old, they probably do not need any authority to allow them to see you, they probably could visit with you on their own. Any court action would not be very fruitful as the child is so old already. Good luck.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
