Legal Question in Family Law in California

Can my spouse avoid alimony by quitting his job and avoiding being served? My husband found out I'm divorcing him. I recently filed and trying to serve him the legal papers: he's avoiding the server (they tried 5x.). He told me he was quitting his job to take care of his parents and he's "not financially responsible" as he "needs to be with his parents at this time of need" (one has dementia,the other lung cancer). He has a brother/sis-in-law who lives closer to his parents who takes care of them. Can he do this? What can I do?
